Cow tattoo on a stomach

Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon cow stands side on across the belly, with a curled tail, a yellow flower on its head and dripping shapes beneath its body. The linework is bold and dark, with grey shading on the body and small spots. The navel sits inside the cow's body, and the man's hands pull up his shirt to frame the design.

Aggie had been up since two, and by four the flour in the bakehouse had gone grey with cold. The milk was late again. Her husband had sold the last churn at the Tuesday market, and the dairy at the top of the lane sent nothing until the sun was over the wall. So she took the lantern and went up the hill path in her slippers, past the sleeping hedges, looking for the one cow in the parish nobody had ever managed to fence.

The children called her Bramble, though no one had given her the name. She had a buttercup crown on her brow that nobody had put there. She stood side on in the wet grass with her tail curled up like a question mark, and steam rose from her back in thin ribbons. Aggie set down the lantern. The cow turned her head, looked at the bread bag on Aggie's arm, and then lowered herself beside a dark hollow in the hillside where the spring rose and ran off in drips over the stones.

Aggie knelt. She did not ask. She had learned as a girl that the cow gave only to those who waited, so she held out the jug and counted the breaths between the milk and the dark. When the jug was full, the cow rose, shook the buttercups from her crown, and walked back into the mist with the lantern light sliding over her spots like coins.

By the time the sun cleared the wall, the dough had risen twice and the loaves were cooling on the rack. Aggie left one at the hill gate, still warm, with a yellow flower tucked under the string. Nobody in the village ever saw the cow again, but every morning after that the jug was full.
