Night shift, Ward 7, 02:40. The corridor lights hum at a pitch I have stopped hearing, which is how I know I have been awake too long. Mrs Okafor in bed four keeps asking for her good teeth. I tell her they are in the pot on her locker where they have been since teatime, and she tells me, quite calmly, that the pot is wrong and a man in a grey coat came round asking after them.

I checked the pot anyway. Her dentures were there, pink and ordinary, next to a glass of water going warm. The only other thing on the locker was a dark red paper napkin folded into a neat triangle, and I did not remember putting it there. Kieran from the night porters swore he had seen nobody on the stairs, though he admitted the lift had been stopping at floors nobody had pressed for. He said it with the flat look he gets when he is trying not to be the one who says the odd thing first.

At four the bell for bed four went off, and when I got there the pot was empty. Mrs Okafor was smiling in her sleep with her lips closed, which I had never seen her do. On the napkin, in fountain pen, someone had written: Borrowed for one night. Will return them before the lift stops. Mind the stairs.

At five the pot was full again, and her teeth were sitting in it with an edge on them I did not like, so I put them back in her mouth myself and told her she looked lovely.
