Realistic eye with red watercolour splash

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A realistic human eye with a dark eyebrow, detailed lashes and a shaded iris sits at the centre of the design. Soft red and pink watercolour washes spread behind the eye, with drips running down beneath it and small spatter marks at the lower left. The eye is rendered in black and grey shading while the surrounding splashes use vivid red tones against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Carrow Dale would paint an eye on a door after that winter, not since Mags Telford's did what it did. Her husband had come home from the lead mines with his pockets full of stolen ore and a story about where he got it. She painted an eye on the lintel of their cottage to watch him, the way her mother had taught her, and by Candlemas the red had started to run.

It ran down the limewash in long threads, pink at first, then the colour of a cut. The village said the eye was watching for the truth, and that a man who told lies could not look at it for long. Gerald Telford tried. He stood under it every morning with his cap in his hands and said he had done nothing wrong, and every morning the paint came down a little further, until one Sunday it reached the step and he could not walk past without his boots going red.

He confessed in the end, though not to the magistrate. He went to the mine office and laid the ore on the desk, and the clerk, who had known about the theft for a year, only nodded and wrote it down. Mags scrubbed the step for a week. The stains would not come out of the stone, so she left them, a row of small spatters leading from the door to the road, so that anyone who came calling would see the price of a lie before they reached her.

Word is the eye is still on that lintel, cracked and faded, but the drips never dried. Walk up the path after rain and you will see them, bright as fresh paint, and you will know to keep your hands honest and your boots clean.
