Geometric arrow tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's bare upper back shows a vertical black tattoo of a stacked arrow-like motif built from diamonds, chevrons and straight lines, centred along the spine. The linework is solid and crisp with no visible shading, and the ink reads as dark against the skin. A striped woven blanket drapes over one shoulder on the right, and the head is cropped out at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The arrows on the stairwell wall at Hollins House were painted by someone who had never seen a fire exit. Three chevrons stacked on a single black stroke, pointing down toward the bin store, so every tenant who came home at two in the morning went the wrong way first. Mr Okonedo from flat 41 had complained about it at four residents' meetings. I was the one who finally got the council to repaint them, because I was the caretaker and nobody else answered the phone after nine.

I took a tin of enamel and a steel rule up the stairs on a Saturday and sat on the landing between the seventh and eighth floors with a pencil. Drawing a diamond inside a diamond is easy. Drawing it so every line meets at the same point, so the whole thing reads as one arrow from the ground to the roof, takes most of a morning. My hand kept wanting to bend the top chevron. Mrs Akhtar came out in her dressing gown with a mug of tea and watched me measure. She said her husband used to do the lettering on the mosque hoardings in Bradford, and he was never once allowed to rush a line.
By dinnertime the shaft ran from the ground floor past the lift doors to the top landing, straight as a plumb line. I painted the diamonds first, then the chevrons, then the spine, each one dry before the next touched it. When I stood back the arrow pointed up, which was the right way, and the bin-store door looked like what it was, a door nobody needed in a hurry.
Mr Okonedo came up the stairs that night, slowly, one hand on the rail, and stopped at the landing to read it. He said nothing. He touched the top point with two fingers, the way you check wet paint, and went on up to his flat.
