Vertical geometric arrow on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small vertical tattoo of a stylised arrow sits centrally on the upper back, built from a column of fine black lines. Chevron and diamond shapes stack along the centre, with a pointed tip at the top and a smaller arrowhead at the base. The skin is smooth and evenly lit against a black strappy top, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The rain had been at the ash trees for three days when Aunt Hester sent me up to Coldharbour Edge with the sighting line. Nobody in Thornbeck went up past the stile without a reason, and my reason was a dead arrow shaft nailed to the boundary post, its fletching gone to grey mush, pointing the wrong way.

Hester was a fletcher before she was anything else. She taught me that a shaft has to fly true or it has to be burned, and that you read a forest by its lines the way you read feathers, rib by rib. From the post I could see the whole wood laid out: the chevrons of beech crowns stacked down the slope, the diamond clearings where the charcoal burners had worked, and one straight gap running from the mill pond to the old fold. It was not a path at all but a sight line someone had cut a long time ago.
I lined the staff along it and waited for the mist to lift. When it did, the arrow shape was there in the valley, drawn in black lines I had never once seen from the village. The pointed head sat on the fold, the shaft ran down through the mill, and the small barbed tail was the stone bridge at the bottom. Somebody had planted the whole village along a target, and the target had been waiting for someone to notice.
I reset the post a hand's width east, and the arrow sat true again. Hester said I had done a clumsy thing and a clever one in the same afternoon, which from her was praise.
