Vertical geometric arrow tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small vertical tattoo of a stylised arrow sits along the centre of the upper back, with a pointed tip at the top and a matching point at the base. Its body is built from fine black lines forming a diamond and lattice pattern, with crossing strokes stacked down the middle. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the design is shown in sharp focus against warm skin and a black strappy top.

The third marker had drifted again by the time Ilse and I reached the salt flats, so I stopped trusting the stakes and started trusting the arrows. Every survey crew on Harrow Deep learned to read them: a bone-coloured pole driven into the crust, a lattice cut into its face, a point aimed at whatever mattered. Ours was the only one that pointed at the well.

Ilse said the lattice was a fault, that the cutter had jittered. I said it was a count. Each diamond in the crossing lines held one year of rain the old surveyors had logged before the pumps failed, and if you counted them from the tip down you got the depth of the aquifer in metres. She laughed at me for a whole afternoon, which was fair. Then she counted it herself, crouched in the shade of the pole with her thumb tracing the cuts, and went quiet.
We dug where the arrow pointed. Forty metres. The water came up cold and smelling of iron, and it was exactly the depth the lattice said it would be.
Ilse wrote the number in the logbook under mine. Neither of us mentioned that the surveyor who carved the thing had died three summers before we were born, or that nobody had asked him to be right.
