Vertical geometric arrow tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo runs vertically along the centre of the upper back, made up of arrowheads at each end with a diamond lattice of crossing lines in between. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on bare skin between the straps of a black open-back top, with the rest of the frame showing soft, plain skin.

Dear Mum,

The Hollis fair pulled into Market Dunning on Tuesday, and Uncle Ray has finally let me paint the signs. Not the big board over the waltzer, he says that takes a man with steady hands, but the little arrows nailed to every gatepost between the lane and the field, so the lorries know where to go. I've painted eleven. The arrowhead points the way in, the shaft is the path, and the crossing lines are where the diamonds of rope stake the ground.
Ray thinks I'm being fussy. I measured each one against a length of string he cut from the old tent guy, and he laughed until he had to sit on a crate. Still, the marks have to be exact or the caravans end up in the Wrights' turnips.
Yesterday a girl from the village came asking which way the show folk had gone, and I pointed her at the arrow on the oak by the stile. She looked at it for a long time, then said it looked like a map of somewhere she had never been. I told her that was the whole point. Every fair is a map drawn on borrowed fields that forgets itself by Sunday.
Tonight I'm packing the brushes. I've left one arrow on the gate of the empty pasture, pointing back the way we came, so if you ever decide to visit, you'll know the road.
Love, Bet
