Cartoon elephant with flower behind ear
Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon elephant in grey with a pink-red ear and a tiny purple flower above its raised trunk, sitting on the skin behind the ear. The outlines are soft and the shading is light, with simple flat areas of grey and pink. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with the ear and dark hair visible around it.

Old Mabel Fenwick kept the bakery at the bottom of Church Lane, and every autumn the children of Little Wrenfold came to her for the sugared buns that nobody else wanted. The little grey elephant came too, though nobody had ever seen where he lived. He arrived on the third Tuesday of October with a purple flower balanced above his raised trunk, as if he had been sent to deliver it and was taking the job seriously.

Mabel asked him what the flower was for. He lifted it higher and blew a small sound through his trunk that the baker decided meant good morning. Then he walked to the back step, sat down, and waited, his pink ear flapping slowly, until the boy named Tom Gurney came out with a crust of bread he had been meaning to throw away for a week.
After that, the elephant came every Tuesday. He never bought anything. He took one bun from the tray, always the one with the cracked top, and left the flower on the step when he went. By the end of winter there were nineteen flowers in a jam jar on the windowsill, and Mabel had stopped sweeping them out.
The year the school reunion was held in the village hall, Tom Gurney stood up in his good coat and told the room that the elephant had never once asked for anything. Mabel, who was seventy-eight and not one for speeches, said that was the trouble with some people: they gave you a flower and expected nothing back, and you never knew how to thank them. Nobody in the hall could say who had sent the elephant. But the jar was still on the windowsill, and the cracked bun was always gone by the afternoon.
