Black lettering tattoo running vertically down a woman's spine, her bare back visible in a white backless dress.

Vertical script quote along the spine

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long platinum blonde hair sits with her back to the camera, wearing a white backless dress with lace trim. A vertical line of small black script runs down the centre of her spine, and most of the words are too small to read clearly. The black ink is set against bare skin and the soft white fabric, with a plain light background.

Ambrose had painted the name boards for the Lark and Lantern fair for thirty-one seasons, and the one thing his hand had never managed was a straight line without a rule. The rule had gone missing somewhere between Ipswich and Bridlington, so on the night before the Whitsun opening he sat on an upturned crate behind the carousel with a pot of size and a brush worn down to a whisker.

He was writing down the back wall of the old caravan, letters stacked one above another the way his mother used to hang washing, each word a little narrower than the one before. Nell came out with two mugs of tea and read it aloud, slowly, and stuck on the third line. "Who's it for?" she asked. "Nobody who needs to read it straight," he said. "It's for the lamps."

Every season the fair strung the same bulbs along the midway, and he had always thought the light made the painted boards look flat. This time he had laid the lettering so the strip lights would throw their shadows across it at a slant, so each word would show clearly only when the generator kicked in after dark and the whole midway turned gold.

Nell said nothing for a while. Then she set her mug on the step, took the brush from his hand, and added a small full stop at the foot of the column, right where the wall met the grass. "There," she said. "Now nobody can say it isn't your handwriting."
