Vintage floral bouquet on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a woman's upper arm and shoulder, with a bouquet of roses, peonies and smaller blossoms in pink, red, yellow and purple. The flowers are rendered in soft, painterly shading with fine outlines and green foliage, giving a classical botanical feel. The bouquet runs down the arm against a plain light grey background, with the subject's face out of frame.

The rain had got into the third bill of the day, and the peony ran grey down the board before Ada Pell had finished its petals. She wiped the brush on her apron and looked across the field at the big top, its canvas patched like an old kettle, the last of the lions snoring in a van with the flap tied shut.

Mr Corrigan wanted lions painted on the side of the wagon. Lions sold tickets, he said, and he had the paint for lions, a tin of ochre and a tin of black that smelled of tar. Ada had told him the lions had gone to a zoo in Leeds in March, and that people paying a shilling wanted something pretty to look at while they waited for the sawdust to settle. So she painted what her mother had painted on the milk churns at home: a loose bunch of pink roses, a yellow bloom gone blowsy at the edges, and sprigs of lavender for the blue.
Corrigan came back at dusk with a lantern and stood a long time in front of it. 'Nobody comes to a circus for flowers,' he said. She told him nobody came for lions either any more, and he laughed, then didn't, and went off to count the takings in the cash tin, which held eleven shillings and a brass button.
On the last night the wagon rolled out of the field with its bouquet facing the road. A boy on a bicycle slowed to read the name painted beneath it, then stopped to look at the roses, and Ada, walking behind with her paint box, watched him try to work out what sort of circus would bother with petals. She didn't tell him. The paint was still tacky in the sun, and the colours kept their shine as long as the rain stayed off.
