Vintage whale on the outer thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single whale swims upward in profile, with its tail fluke at the top and its head and open mouth at the bottom. The body is built from fine hatched lines and dark solid areas that give it an etched, woodcut-like appearance. The image is in black and grey, and the whale is centred on bare skin with the frayed edge of grey fabric across the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came over Hollin Pass on the third day of December and did not stop until the inn's well had frozen twice. Ada Brack kept the fire going on salt cod and turnips. Her son Tom, nine years old, spent his mornings at the back window, where the yard trough had a skin of ice on it as thick as a slate.

"There's something under it," he said on the sixth morning. Ada came and looked. The ice was grey, and beneath it something dark turned over slow as a cloud and was gone. Her grandmother had told her that the old quarry lake lay under the pass, that it had been the sea once, and that the creature in it had been promised the trough in return for keeping the snow off the road. Ada had thought it a story for frightening children. She put on her boots anyway.

She broke the ice with the poker. The water steamed in the cold. Something rose beneath, a long back, then a head broad as a cart, the jaw opening slowly while the great fluke lifted at the far end and sent snow sliding off the yard wall. It breathed out a column of white. Tom laughed. Ada did not. "Fetch the kettle," she said. "It's owed its drink."

They poured the kettle in. The whale sank, and the spout closed over. By morning the snow had stopped, the road was clear, and the only mark in the yard was a long curve in the drift, like a question drawn by someone in no hurry. Ada hung the lamp in the window and left it lit, as her grandmother had.
