Violets and a bee on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several purple and yellow violet flowers on trailing green stems, with large veined green leaves and a realistic honeybee with translucent wings on the left. The linework is clean and the leaves use soft green shading, while the flowers have layered purple tones. The design wraps diagonally from the top of the shoulder down the upper arm against a plain skin background.

The sovereign of Varrowmere had banned bees from the palace gardens the spring her violets refused to open, so you crept out before dawn with a pewter cup and a jar of honey to find the one bee that still dared the walls. You knew the hive lay beneath the old wine cellar, and that its bees had been sworn to the queen's grandmother long before anyone thought to count them.

The bee came to you at the foot of the sundial, its wings flat as cut glass, and settled on a violet that had pushed through a crack in the bottom step. Violets, the steward had told everyone, were a sign of mourning in Varrowmere, because the last duke had been buried beneath them. You did not believe him. You had watched the purple heads bow and lift again in the rain, and you had watched the bee walk from petal to petal as if reading a letter only it could understand.
On the ninth morning the bee led you through the shrubbery to the iron gate, and past it to the chapel steps, where the queen sat alone with a bowl of cold tea. She did not look up. She asked whether the flowers had been opened by a hand or by the sun. You told her the truth, which was that the bee had opened them, one at a time, and asked for nothing but a little honey.
The queen laughed for the first time that year, and the gate was unbarred before noon. By summer the violets climbed every wall in Varrowmere, and no one remembered the duke at all.
