Violin and skyline outline on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a city skyline, with a tall spire on the left, a large violin in the centre and tall blocks of buildings on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink only. It sits on the arm against a busy cartoon print fabric, with the design filling most of the frame.

Ada Rowntree had not played her grandfather's violin since the factories closed, and the instrument had grown a crack along the belly that she could feel with her thumb. On the eleventh night of the blackout she carried it up to the roof of Fenwick House and sat on the parapet with the case open beside her like a dog waiting to be fed.

From up there the city was only edges. The needle of the old St Aldric's spire stood on the left, the grey blocks of the Mill Row flats ran down to the right, and between them the dark river took everything else. Her grandfather had said a skyline was just a line you agreed to look at together. She had never understood that until the power went and there was nothing left to see but the outline.

She tucked the violin under her chin and played the one tune he had taught her, badly at first, then not badly at all. The first note carried across the water. Somewhere on Mill Row a window lit, then another, a candle or a torch, and then the light on St Aldric's came back on, flickering as though it had forgotten how.

Ada kept playing until her fingers stung, and by the last bar the whole skyline was burning again, every block of it drawn in light against the dark. She closed the case, walked down the fire stairs in the dark, and told the others the lines had come back.
