Colour tattoo of a stylised woman with flowing hair, the word Virgo and flower motifs on the forearm.

Virgo zodiac figure and flowers on forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised woman with long, flowing hair is drawn in fine blue outlines, with the word Virgo in script above her head. Four flower motifs in teal, orange, green and purple surround the figure, and vines and swirls trail down from her hair. The colours are soft and pastel-like against the skin, and the composition runs vertically along the forearm.

The last train is late, so you sit on the bench outside the florist's kiosk at Harrowby Road and watch the rain come sideways under the canopy. Mrs Oyelaran has left you in charge of the till and a bucket of cut stock she swears will last until Monday. Among the lilies are four dyed carnations, teal, orange, green and violet, the leftovers of a wedding that was called off in March, and you are the only one who has ever bothered to count them.

A woman comes up the steps with a battered suitcase and a ticket held in her teeth, her hair blown loose across one eye like the long blue lines on the poster for the summer excursions. She asks whether the 9.40 to Sheffield has gone. You tell her it's delayed, which is true, and she sighs and asks if there is anything in the kiosk that makes waiting less grim. You pull the violet carnation from the bucket and hand it over without charging her. She turns it over, reads the little card tucked in its wrap, and laughs at the handwriting. It says Sorted, in Mrs Oyelaran's looping pen, and nothing else.

The board flickers. Platform two, not one. She goes, and you watch her climb the stairs with the flower held upright like a lamp. Only afterwards do you find the cash tin open and a second card underneath the first, in your own hand, which you do not remember writing: three stems left, all of them owed to someone who has not yet arrived.
