Virgo zodiac symbol on the back of a neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and shoulders, with long light hair gathered to one side by a hand. A solid black Virgo zodiac symbol sits centrally on the nape, drawn with smooth, even linework and no visible shading. The image is monochrome with a dark background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

You find the hair comb on the twelfth floor landing, caught in the brush strip of the fire door, and you carry it down to the caretaker's cupboard because nobody else in Wren House ever looks at the floor. The cupboard smells of bleach and damp cardboard. Someone has pinned LOST PROPERTY to the shelf with masking tape, and beneath it sits a ledger that has grown over three winters: a child's mitten, two keys to flats that no longer exist, a single trainer with the laces still tied.

Mrs Okafor from block C asks after the comb on Thursday. She describes it before you show it to her, the tortoiseshell teeth and the chip near the spine, which is how you know it belongs to her daughter. The girl is twenty-two and works nights at the Royal, so the comb has been travelling the building for weeks without a home. You hand it over while the lift music drifts through the wall, the same three notes it has played since before you were born.

Afterwards you sit on the cupboard step with the ledger open on your knee and turn back through the pages. Every entry ends with a small mark you began making years ago, a letter m with its last stroke looped back on itself. It is the sign your mother swore you were born under, the one that belongs to the maiden who keeps the harvest and counts every grain. You had never thought of it as a habit until now. You draw it beside Mrs Okafor's name, close the ledger, and turn off the cupboard light.
