Vous etes belle arrow on the foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black arrow runs diagonally across the top of a light-skinned foot, with the French phrase Vous etes belle written in cursive along its shaft. The linework is delicate and even, with small feather fletching at the tail and a simple pointed head. The tattoo is shown in black ink against dark fabric, with the subject centred and filling the frame.

Dear Margot, the crows have got into the Reinette trees again, and Papa has been out at dawn with his old longbow, swearing in two languages at the one bird that will not die. I told him he would frighten the neighbour's goats before he hit anything. He only laughed and said the bow was older than both of us and had never once been asked to be polite.

You will want to know about the letter you left in the drawer. I found it on Tuesday when I was looking for string. The paper had gone soft at the folds, and the ink in your handwriting had bled a little, as if it had got damp in the cellar. I read it standing by the press, with the smell of last year's cider coming up through the boards, and I did not know whether to be cross with you or to sit down on the floor.
That afternoon Papa came in with a single jay feather caught in his cap and gave it to me without a word. He had cut a shaft of ash from the hedge, notched it, and set the feather at the tail. The head was a sliver of old tin from the roof, and it was not straight. He pressed it into my palm and said, in the careful French he keeps for weddings and funerals, Vous êtes belle, and then went back out to the trees before I could answer him.
I have kept it on the windowsill beside the jar of pips. I am writing to say you should come home for the picking, and bring the English husband if he will eat our bread. The arrow is still there. The crows are still there. Papa has stopped shooting at them, and I think that is the most honest thing I have seen him do all year.
