Walk by faith script on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a bare foot with the words walk by faith in a thin, cursive script on the top edge near the ankle, with the toes visible at the left. The lettering is a single dark, delicate line with small loops and some variation in height. A separate copy of the same design sits below the photo on a plain white background.

Mr Oakes wanted the words on the pier board by Saturday, and he wanted them in the copperplate his late wife had taught the schoolroom, which I could not manage. My hand is too quick. I write like a man late for a train. So it was Edie Marsh who did it, forty-one years old and sharp as a tack, sitting at the trestle in the back of the chandlery with a pot of lamp-black and a brush no thicker than a hair from a cat.

She would not let me look until it was dry. Walk by faith, the card said, in a line someone had copied from a hymnal, and she had turned it into something that looked like it was writing itself, the loops leaning forward as if they had somewhere to be. The letters climbed and dipped. The f reached down under the line like a hook into water.
On the Saturday the board went up over the slipway, and the tide was out, so the words were the only thing wet in the sun. Mr Oakes stood at the bottom with his cap in his hands and read it aloud twice, slowly, the way men read a bill they cannot afford.
Then he laughed, which none of us expected, and said Edie had made the faith look like a thing you could step onto. I have thought about that since. Edie only shrugged and wiped her brush on her apron, and went back in to fetch the kettle.
