Black fine line script tattoo reading walk by faith across the top of a foot, photographed against a wooden deck.

Walk by faith script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot with the phrase walk by faith written in flowing black script across the top, near the ankle. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering sitting neatly along the curve of the foot. The plain grey wooden deck behind the foot keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Tomas had been told the snow would hold until Candlemas, and he had believed it the way a man believes a priest. By the third day above the tree line the pack mule had stopped complaining and started refusing, and the path ahead was a white seam that vanished into cloud. He kept the letter inside his coat, where the cold could not reach it and his own hands could not keep checking it. His mother's writing was slanted and looping, the ink gone brown at the folds. Her last line read only: walk by faith, not by sight, and I will be at the chapel door.

He had never thought much of sermons. A man who had driven cattle down from the high meadows since he was nine knew that sight was the only thing that got you over a ridge. Yet at the Scarpa cairn the fog thinned for a moment, and he saw nothing but a grey shelf of rock with a sheep's skull wedged in the gap beyond it. The drop looked like the end of the world. He stepped anyway, because the letter told him to, and his boot found stone that had been there all along, hidden by the murk.

The chapel at Vell lit its lamps at dusk, and he reached the door just as the last of the light went out of the valley. He lifted his hand to knock, but the door opened before his knuckles touched the wood. His mother stood there with a lantern, looking not at his face but at the snow caked on his shoulders, as though she were counting what the mountain had taken from him. "You came by the old path," she said. "I told you it was there." He had not seen it. He had only trusted the hand that wrote it.
