The lamp-room clock said twenty past four and still the cage had not come up, so Nell Crossley stood at the pit gate with her shawl pulled tight and counted the men coming out of the lane. Eleven. Twelve. Her father's chalk marks were on the lamp-room board, and beside Tom's name he had written nothing at all.

Mrs Ridley from the end house came up beside her with a basket on her hip and said the roof had come down at the far face, that the men were being walked out the long way by the old drift. Nell said nothing. All week she had carried her aunt's letter in her apron pocket, the one that ended with three words underlined, walk by faith, and nothing else, and she had thought it a strange thing to send a girl who had only ever been asked to wait.
The men came up in ones and twos, black to the eyes, and at last there was Tom, limping, his lamp dead in his hand and a bandage on his forearm. He did not run to her. He stopped under the gas lamp and held the lamp out as though it were an apology. Behind him their father came slowly, one hand on the stone wall, and Nell understood the walk had been longer than anyone had let on.
She took the lamp from Tom and did not let go of it. 'You came out by the old drift,' she said. 'Aye,' he said. 'Dark as a cellar, and I could not see a yard.' She hooked his good arm through hers and turned them towards the rows, where lamps were already lit in the front windows, and they walked the length of the lane without speaking, each boot set down before the other on the cinder path as if that were the only thing ever asked of them.
