Walk by faith script on the foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot with the words walk by faith written in thin, cursive black script across the top of the foot near the ankle. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the lettering sits diagonally along the foot. The background shows a grey shoe on the left and a pink toenail, with the image cropped tightly around the foot.

The lamp had died at the second hut, so I crossed the Kessel Pass by the grey light the snow gave back, one hand on the rope and the other pressed flat to my coat where your letter was folded. You wrote it in pencil on the back of a seed invoice, Mam. I have read it so often the creases have worn soft as cloth, but I still know the last line by heart: walk by faith, even when the path is only a rumour.

Brannoch, the guide, reckoned the cornice above the col would hold until noon. He said it the way he said everything, as if the mountain had confided in him and he was only passing the news along. We roped up at first light with six mules, a hired boy called Tomas who sang whenever he was frightened, and a black dog that would go ahead of nobody.
At the top the wind came off the ridge hard enough to lift the letter clean out of my hand. It skated across the snow and snagged on a fist of rock, and I went after it on my knees, the rope snapping taut behind me. When I got it back the pencil had smudged over your signature, but the words that mattered were still there, and Tomas was already shouting that the lead mule had gone sideways onto the slope.
We went down into the cloud the way you taught me to cross the kitchen in the dark, counting steps and trusting the floor. Brannoch swears the cornice held. I think it was the dog who found the ground first, but I have not told him that, and I have not put the letter away.
