Script quote along the side of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo reads Walk by faith not by sight in a flowing, handwritten lettering style. It runs diagonally along the outer side of a bare foot, from the heel up towards the toes, against a dark blue textured surface. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no colour or shading.

Tomas had lit the harbour lamps for eleven winters and never once needed to look at the steps. Fog came off the Firth that Thursday like wet wool, and by six the quay was gone. He stood at the top of the slipway with the taper in his fist and heard the gulls shifting somewhere below, out of sight.

His mother's letter was folded in his waistcoat pocket, soft at the creases. She had written it the year before she died, in the thin looping hand she used for recipes and the parish rota, and it had been her way of saying a thing she would not say aloud. Walk by faith, not by sight, she had written. He had thought it was about the church. Standing there, he thought it was about counting.

He counted. Eleven paces to the bollard, the cold iron rail on his left, nine more to the step where the boards gave under a boot. The sea was loud below him, closer than he liked. At the lamp post he set the taper to the wick, and the glow bloomed up through the fog like a window someone had opened for him, a small yellow shape he could not see the edges of but could walk toward.

Fishermen out past the breakwater saw the lights come on one by one along the quay, and nobody remarked on it. Tomas folded the letter back into his pocket and went on to the next post.
