Wand and stars on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a wand with a segmented, bead-like shaft runs along the side of a finger, with a cluster of small star and sparkle shapes at the tip. The linework is dark and fairly thin, with light shading along the shaft. The image is in black and grey against a plain textured cream wall, and the tattoo fills a narrow strip of the finger.

He held his temper until the curtain was down. Then he shouted for twenty minutes, mostly about the stars.

The stars are what I want to tell you about. Ambrose says a wand without a sparkle at the tip is just a stick with ambitions, so I spent Wednesday with a tin of glitter and the good glue, picking dust off the boards while the landlady counted the spoons. The shaft was the easy part. He bought a string of turned wooden beads from a stall in Ramsgate, each one a shade smaller than the last, and I threaded them onto the dowel one a night, sanding the joins until nothing snagged on the cuffs.

Last night the new wand went out for the first time. I stood in the wings with my hand on the velvet and watched the lamplight catch the bead nearest the tip, and I thought how the whole length of it had been broken once and nobody in the front row could tell. Ambrose pointed it at the empty top hat, and three little paper stars rose out of nothing and drifted down over the stalls as if they had always been meant to fall that way.

Write back soon. Tell me the ship's cook can make a decent pudding and that you have not let the sea take any of your fingers.
