Wanderlust lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A person wearing a dark helmet holds a silver rangefinder camera to their face, so the face is hidden. A black script word reading wanderlust is tattooed along the outer right forearm, with a red and dark tattoo partly visible on the left forearm. The background is a graffiti wall and an open concrete area in warm, soft daylight.

Maud, don't tell Dad about the camera. I know he'd want it back on the shelf above the fridge where he kept it like a relic, but I sold it in Porto to a man who mended clocks, and he paid more than I expected because the rangefinder was still true. The money is folded in my boot. Most of it has already gone on a bus to Seville and two nights in a room above a bakery where the shutters rattle whenever a tram goes past.

The thing I want you to know is about the roll. Dad loaded it the morning he went into hospital, and I found it rewound on the windowsill with the cardboard tab still tucked under the spool. Thirty-six frames, all of them shot from the back step: the hedge, the bins, you on the swing in that yellow coat. I had it developed in a shop by the river that smelled of vinegar. The woman behind the counter held the strip up to the light and said nothing for a long time.

Then she told me the last frame was blank. Not underexposed, blank, as if the shutter had opened on nothing at all. I stood on the cobbles arguing with myself about whether that was a fault or a message, and then I laughed so hard a man selling oranges asked if I needed sitting down.

So I've decided it's a map. Dad always said the best pictures are the ones you haven't taken yet. Tomorrow I'm walking east until the trams stop and the river runs out of city. Keep the swing warm. I'll send the next frame when I find something worth one.
