Blue leaf motif tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm shows a small tattoo of stylised blue leaves fanning upwards from a central oval motif outlined in black, with pink detail inside. Small blue and black triangles sit to the right of the design. The bold outlines and flat fills are shown against bare skin, with the hand gripping a handlebar and a blurred road behind.

The bargeman's daughter counted the lilies on the Ketter canal each morning before the lock keeper unbarred the gate, and each morning the count was wrong. There had been nine blue ones in October. By February there were four, and the water between the reeds had gone the colour of pewter, too cold for anything with sense to open.

Her father said the lilies were stubborn and would return when they were ready, which was the sort of thing he said when he had nothing to mend. So she took the ferry-boat across to the chandler's on Sallow Street, where an old man kept a drawer of brass oval mirrors salvaged from a sunk pleasure steamer. He wanted a coin and a song. She gave him the song her mother used to sing over the tiller, and he gave her an oval of tarnished brass with a pink glass seed set in its middle.

She rowed back against the current with the mirror wrapped in oilcloth. At the lock she knelt on the wet planks and laid it face down on the water, pink seed upward, the way her mother had taught her to lay a leaf to dry. The skin of ice cracked. Blue points lifted from the grey one at a time and fanned out in a ring, and three small triangles of spray flicked up from the gate as if the sun had decided after all to show its teeth.

The lock keeper counted them when he came out and got nine. He never asked what she had traded for them, which was the wisest thing anyone on that canal ever did.
