Warrior face with eagle, bear and wolf design
Black and grey · Flash
A drawn tattoo design showing a bearded warrior's face with one eye visible, set within a cracked stone opening. An eagle perches at the top, a bear sits to the right, a wolf is partly visible on the left, and a horned helmet shape curves across the upper left, with a triquetra and interlace pattern running down the centre. Detailed shading and bold outlines are mostly grey and black, with brown tones on the bear and branches and a small red streak.

The snow had sealed the Ashgrove road for three days when the stranger knocked at the byre door instead of the front, and I knew from that he had come up from the fells on foot and did not want the whole room looking at him. I was breaking ice off the cistern with the iron ladle, my breath standing in front of me like a second, slower traveller. He held up a coin worn smooth at the edges and asked only for a bench by the hearth and whatever soup was still warm.

I gave him the settle beside the bear pelt, the one my father won in a wager my mother never let him forget. Above the door the carved lintel still shows the triquetra my grandmother cut the year the mill burned, and the serpents twist along the bench arms where children have rubbed their names away with their thumbs. The horned helmet hangs on its peg by the kitchen, black with smoke. He watched it the whole evening without once asking to touch it. Overhead, the eagle my brother trapped as a fledgling shifted on the beam and muttered in its sleep, the grey hound at my feet lifted its head toward the door, and the wind leaned on the shutters like someone wanting in.
Near midnight he told me about a winter when the pass closed and three companions went up into the rock to find a way through, one carrying a feather for luck, one walking as if a bear were at his shoulder, one following the wolf's tracks because the wolf knew where the snow held. He spoke as though the story were mine to keep. I didn't ask whether he had walked that road himself.
At first light the bench was empty and the fire was ashes. A single grey feather lay in the lintel knot, and the helmet's horns were scraped clean of frost. The snow at the back door held one line of prints heading toward the pass, and beside them, pressed deep, the marks of something with four feet that had not been asked in.
