Tribal phoenix in flames
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised phoenix rising from the centre, with its body formed by a narrow white negative space and its wings and tail made of long, pointed black flames. The linework is bold and mostly solid black, with fine hatching and small internal flame details on the wing shapes. The design is entirely black on a plain white background, with no shading in greys.

You have been pulling the same ember from the hearth for three nights, and on the fourth the old potter in Thessaly tells you to stop. Ash does not forgive a clumsy hand, he says, and he hands you a copper bowl instead, scratched with the shape of a bird that has already burned once. You do not understand what he means until the lamp gutters and the walls of the workshop start to lean toward you like wings.

The flames come first, black against the whitewashed plaster, long and pointed as spear tips, licking upward from the floor and curling out of sight. Then the body forms in the empty space between them, a narrow column of pale light with a neck that bends like a question. Its tail trails down toward the threshold, a single thread of smoke that breaks and reforms with every breath you take. You want to call out. Your tongue has turned to cinder.
In the morning the potter finds you sitting cross-legged beside a cold kiln, the copper bowl balanced on your knees, filled to its rim with grey feathers that crumble when he touches them. He does not ask what you saw. He only nods at the bowl and says that next time you should ask the fire what it wants before you take it home.
You leave Thessaly before the first ships sail, carrying the bowl wrapped in linen and a promise you cannot yet name. Somewhere past the mountains you stop at a spring to wash your face, and the water shows you your own reflection with a black wing rising from each shoulder, flames reaching for a sky that has not yet decided to let you go.
