The fletcher's hands were stained brown to the wrist from the walnut oil, and he did not look up when the boy came in with mud drying on his shins. 'You want a bow,' he said. 'Everybody wants a bow.'

'I want to be a warrior,' Tomas said. The fletcher took a length of ash from the rack, turned it in the light and sighted down it the way a man checks a fence. Then he reached for three heron feathers and a coil of green bryony he had cut from the hedge that morning, and began to wind the vine round the wood, tight and then loose, tight and then loose.

'Why the vine?' Tomas asked. 'Ash snaps in the frost,' said the fletcher. 'Vine doesn't. It bends wherever it's pushed and still holds the wood together.' He bound the feathers at the tail with waxed thread, then pressed a single dot of ink into the shaft between two letters he had scratched there, a stop, he said, so a man could draw breath before the next word. 'The rest you'll have to earn at the butts. My father used to say a warrior is the one who comes back to the hedge for more vine.'

Tomas missed the first fourteen times. On the fifteenth the arrow struck the straw and stood there quivering, its vine bent but unbroken. He walked out to pull it free and found the shop shut, the walnut oil gone cold on the bench, and a fresh coil of bryony hanging on the door with a note pinned to it that read only: next one's yours to wind.
