Warriors and smoke on a calf sleeve

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo covers the leg in three panels, each showing a armoured warrior: a horned figure at the top left, a figure in a conical straw hat in the centre, and a masked fighter holding a sickle on the right. The rendering uses smooth shading, detailed armour and strong highlights on the faces and metal. Bold blues, reds and greens dominate, with green smoke and a dark background filling the lower sections.

Dear Tomas,

The harbour master has stopped pretending not to notice the barge. Every night since you sailed, the men row out past the breakwater with lanterns and come back smelling of burnt copper, and the smoke that rolls off the water is green as a bottle. Mrs Abernethy says it is bad luck for the herring fleet. I say it started the week three strangers came off the Lisbon boat: one tall, with a rice-straw hat the gulls refuse to land beneath, one with horns beaten into his helmet, and one with a curved blade on a chain who never once looked at the sea.

They hold the bouts in the old net loft now, with the doors bolted and the lamps turned low. Papa went down on Thursday to watch and came home with split knuckles and a grin I haven't seen since Mama was alive. He says the man in the hat never raises his voice, only lifts two fingers, and the whole loft goes quiet as a church. He says the horned one fights like he is paying a debt, and the chain-blade man fights like the blade is talking to him. Nobody bets money. They bet favours, and Papa has promised the Abernethys' goat.

I am writing because you wrote that the sea off the Azores has gone the same colour, and I have started to think the smoke follows whoever is still owed a fight. Last night I stood at the end of the quay and watched the green come in on the tide, low and patient, and it did not spread so much as wait for something to step out of it. The lamp in the loft went out at midnight. In the morning the net loft door was standing open, the bolts drawn back neatly, and on the wet stones there were three sets of footprints leading down into the water and none coming back.

Come home when the wind turns. Bring nothing green.

Your sister, Ester
