Log cabin in diamond frames on forearms
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four photographs of the same log cabin motif, each placed within a diamond-shaped panel. The designs use bold black outlines with solid fills, and the top-left version is mostly grey with a red roof, while the other three use red, green, blue and yellow ink. Each composition includes pine trees, mountains or snow, with some adding stars, a moon or flower-like elements below the cabin.

The lane was drifted to the gateposts when Ruth Calloway set out for the top pasture, the quad bike coughing in the blue light before dawn. Her father had wintered ewes up there for forty years, and the cabin he built from larch logs still stood at the edge of the pines, its tin chimney bent a little by the last gale. Nobody had lit its stove since he went into the care home in October.

The door was swollen in its frame. She put her shoulder to it and the snow inside gave way with a soft sigh, spilling across the boards. Everything was where he had left it: the kettle on its hook, a row of jam jars with dates written in pencil, and a paraffin lamp with its glass sooted black. Under the lamp lay a folded sheet of graph paper addressed in his square capitals to whoever came next.
It held a pencil drawing of a diamond-shaped window, a moon tucked into one corner and a line of cabins climbing the hillside like steps. Beneath it he had written, 'Stove draws better if you open the vent first. Mind the step. Ewes are fine if you are.' She laughed, and the laugh went up white into the rafters.
By noon she had the stove roaring and the chimney cleared with a length of wire. She sat on an upturned crate with her boots steaming and watched the smoke climb straight up through the still air, thin as a pencil line, until it reached the sky above the pines and was gone. Somewhere below, the lane was filling with snow again, but the cabin was warm, and for the first time since October the chimney was breathing.
