Sailboat tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small sailboat with a shaded grey sail and dark hull sits above light blue waves, with three birds in flight above it. The linework is light and sketchy, with stippled shading on the sail. Blue ink appears only in the water, against bare skin and a patterned fabric background.

The wind had died off Bembridge by the time Nan decided we were going to lose the race, and she said so in the flat voice she kept for bad weather and worse cooking. Our little sloop hung in the grey water with her sail slack as a wet shirt. Three gulls came over the headland, circled once, and settled on the mast the way they always did when a boat had given up.

My grandfather built the Marigold in a shed behind the chip shop in 1961, and he never once let anyone steer her in a calm. "A boat that can't wait is only a bath," he used to say, usually while sanding something that did not need sanding. I was eight the summer he taught me to read the water, the dark patches that meant wind coming and the pale ones that meant nothing at all. I thought he was showing off. Now I think he was teaching me to be patient with something that would not care whether I finished.
Nan went below and came back with the flask and his old pencil tin. Tucked under the lid was a tide table with a sketch on the back: a sail shaded in tiny dots, the water in one soft blue wash because he had run out of pencil and borrowed a biro from the harbourmaster. "He always drew the birds first," she said. "Said they told you where the wind would be before the flag did."
The breeze came up from the east so gently I felt it on my neck before I saw the ripple. Nan didn't cheer. She just handed me the tiller and said, "Go on, then. He'd have wanted you unbearable about it." We slid past the buoy at the speed of a held breath, and I looked back once. The gulls had lifted off the mast and were flying ahead of us, three small marks that never seemed to land.
