Watercolour city skyline on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A city skyline runs across the forearm, with tall towers and rooftops of varying heights rendered in soft, blended washes. The edges are loose and feathered, with splashes of pink, purple and turquoise bleeding into one another. The skyline sits on the forearm against a blurred background of warm light and a partly visible printed sign.

Mrs Vesey never let you touch the good brushes until the rain had stopped, and it hadn't stopped for three days. You stood at the back of Halloran's print shop with a jam jar of water going cloudy in your hand, watching her load a flat brush with violet, then tip a little turquoise into the wet edge so it bled without asking permission.

"Don't draw the buildings," she said. "Let them arrive. You only tell the paint where the sky stops."
The commission was for the window of the chandler's opposite, the last shopfront on Fenner Street before the council's machines came in May. Forty years of painted glass, all of it going for a car park. She wanted the skyline of the old town on it, the towers the way you remember them from the top deck of the bus, not the way they actually stood.
On the last afternoon she pressed a sheet of tracing paper to the glass and told you to sign it. You wrote your initials small in the corner, down near the rooftops where nobody would look. Then the rain came back, and the pink ran down into the purple, and the turquoise pooled at the foot of the tallest tower until the whole city looked like it was sliding gently into the river.
Mrs Vesey stood back, nodded once, and said the buildings had finally stopped pretending to be solid.
