Watercolour city skyline across upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo of a city skyline with tall rectangular buildings fills the upper back, with a small circular tattoo visible near the neck. The buildings are outlined in fine black lines and filled with soft washes of red, orange, blue and grey that bleed outward. Loose black brush strokes and ink splatters run beneath the skyline, and the head is turned away from the camera.

Mae had mixed the wash too thin again, and by the time she reached the third storey of the hoarding the rain had already begun to carry the colour down the boards. Below her on Carrow Street the lights changed to amber and nobody looked up. She had been told the job was simple: a skyline for the new flats on the river, eight panels, enough to make the hoarding look like a city rather than a wall. Simple, Gerald had said, the way he said most things before he went to the pub.

The trouble was the towers. Every time she outlined one in black it looked like it belonged to some other city, a tidy Tuesday city that had never had a bad night. So she stopped drawing what was there and started painting what the light did to it at six o'clock, when the glass went rose and the shadows pooled blue at the base. She let the orange bleed into the grey and didn't fight it.

On the last afternoon a woman stopped below with a pushchair and a paper cup and shouted up that the buildings looked like they were melting. Mae shouted back that they were supposed to. The woman laughed, then stood there a long while, the way people do when they recognise the place they live in through someone else's mistakes.
