City skyline with a red heart on an arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of a stylised city skyline sits on the arm, with a bridge, tall rectangular towers, a dome and a boat or arched structure drawn in bold, uniform black lines above a wavy water line. A small red heart outline floats above the skyline. The black linework is clean and flat with no shading, and the red ink is used only for the heart.

Dear Tom,

The Mersey was flat this morning, so flat the bridge doubled itself in the water as if someone had drawn it twice to be sure. I said so to the second mate and he told me to stop writing poetry on the potato sacks. He's right, I'm no poet, but you'd have liked it. I counted eleven towers from the galley hatch before the tea urn boiled over, and the striped one near the old dock is still missing its flag.
Forty-one passengers came aboard at the Pier Head, most in wet coats, two lads carrying a tuba case between them like a body. I fried two hundred eggs and burned four. Nobody complained. The woman from the dental practice tipped me a whole pound and said the kettle was the best thing about the crossing, which is a lie but a kind one.
Here's what I keep meaning to tell you. On the return sailing the bridge lights came on early because of the fog, and the big arches looked stitched onto the sky. I stood on the aft deck with a bin bag and thought about you on that train, and about the little red heart I painted above the galley hatch the week you left. The paint has chipped on one side. I haven't touched it.
Come home on Friday. We'll see whether it still shows from the water.
Love, and mind the gravy, Jean
