Ornate elephant with lotus and roses on back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large elephant facing the camera fills the centre of the back, its head, tusks and legs decorated with patterned lines, dots and mandala-like detail. Lotus flowers and roses are outlined behind and around it, with loose red and pink watercolour washes and fine dark linework. The ink is mostly black outline with some grey shading on the elephant, while the flowers and washes add colour across the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had lain on the top field for eleven days when the elephant came up the lane, and nobody in Harrowcombe could say where it had come from. Old Mrs Pell swore she heard it before she saw it, a low note through the hedge like a cart axle turning somewhere far off. It walked the way a church procession walks, slow and certain, its ears spread wide and ruled with lines that looked to her like the columns of a ledger.

The farmer, Tom Ashby, had three ewes down with the cold and a barn roof bowed under snow. He opened the gate and the elephant stood aside for him, though nobody had asked it to. Inside the byre it knelt in the straw, which Tom had never thought an elephant could do, and folded its trunk over the lamb that had come too early. The lamb lived. Before dawn a pale ring of frost bloomed on the floorboards in the shape of a lotus, petal over petal, and the children dared each other to step on it and were too frightened to try.

The roses came the next week, climbing the north wall where nothing had grown in living memory, red at the edges as if they had been dipped in the dye vat. Tom's wife said it was a sign of something. Tom said it was a sign of the damp. They argued about it across the kitchen table until the thaw came, and then the elephant walked back down the lane the way it had come, without fuss, leaving prints in the mud that filled with rainwater and held the sky.

Come March the children still went down to look at those prints. Each one had a wash of pink at its rim, and in the middle, where the weight had pressed deepest, sat a single dark petal that the rain could not wash away however hard it tried.
