Watercolour elephants on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
An adult elephant faces left with a calf beside its front legs, both outlined in loose black linework. The shading and colour wash blend into soft yellow, orange, purple, green and blue splashes that fade at the edges. The tattoo sits centrally on the outer upper thigh, with a striped garment visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The mules came up the pass in the dark, and by first light the whole valley below the inn had turned the colour of wet paper. I have been trying to paint it since, though the paints you sent have all run together in the damp. The yellow bleeds into the orange, the green into the blue, and nothing holds its edge the way it did in Lisbon.
Yesterday a female elephant came up the switchbacks from the lowland temple with her calf pressed against her front legs, the way the calf kept trying to hide behind her. The muleteer Tamas swore she was lost. I did not think so. She stopped at the spring below the inn and drank for a long time, while the calf reached under her belly for milk it was too tired to find.
I sketched them in black ink, quick loose lines, because I did not trust myself with more. When I looked up the cow had turned and was watching my window, one ear out like a sail. I held still. She held still. Then she lifted her trunk once towards the hut, and walked on up towards the snow with the calf stepping in her shadow.
I have pinned the sketch above the stove. Tomorrow I will try the wash again, wet on wet, and let the colours find their own way out to the edges. Tell Mum the pass is open and I am eating properly.
Love, Clara
