Watercolour cat face on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A cat's face is tattooed on the lower leg, with green eyes, a pink nose and whiskers drawn in fine lines. The shading is soft and blended, and the splashes and drips of red, orange, blue, yellow and green around the face give a painterly watercolour look. Colour ink dominates the composition, which is centred on the calf against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the bin bags. I'll tell you about the cat on the eleventh floor of Hollins House, the one with the green eyes that could see through the damp. Her name was Marmalade, though the caretaker called her the Plague, because she went in and out of every flat in the block through windows nobody had ever closed properly.

The winter the lifts broke down for six weeks, Marmalade took to the paint store under the bins. Old Mr Adeyemi had left three tins of colour down there when the council changed its mind about the mural, and nobody had the heart to throw them out. One night she knocked the lids off with her paw. By morning the whole stairwell was splashed in red and orange, blue ran down the lift doors like rain on a window, and there was green on the handrails and on the cat herself, who sat in the middle of it all looking pleased.

The council man came round with a clipboard to fine somebody. He stood at the bottom of the stairs with his mouth open. Then he looked up at the sprays and drips and said it was the best thing anyone had done to Hollins House in thirty years, and he could not, for the life of him, find the form to fine a cat.

So they left it. The paint dried, the lifts came back, and every spring after, when the light came through the landing window, you could see her face in the colours, watching the stairs, as if she was keeping count of who came home.
