Watercolour eye and lips on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman's eye with a red brow, long lashes and a blue tear drip sits above a realistically shaded pair of red lips with teeth showing. Soft blue, pink, purple and yellow washes spread around the eye in a loose, splashed effect, with fine shading defining the features. The tattoo is photographed from two angles on the forearm against a dark background.

The blue had run again before the varnish could set, and Ida Quayle stood on the ladder at the Sandgate arcade with a damp rag, swearing at the sea wind coming through the open shutter. Her father had painted the face on that booth for thirty winters and never once let a drip stand. A tear, he used to say, was a promise a painted face made to nobody, so you only let it fall if you meant it.

She had been asked for a red mouth and a watery eye, with a wash of violet and yellow spreading out from it like a thought that hadn't decided where to go. The commission came from Mr Harcourt, who ran the penny machines and wanted something that would make the tourists stop. He paid in cash and a paper bag of pear drops, and he never looked at the sketch for long.
On the last night she mixed the blue herself, from the rinse water off her brushes and a spoonful of the harbour, and let the drip run down the wall to the gutter. In the morning a little boy stopped in front of the booth, pointed at the eye and announced that it was crying in the good way. Ida left the mouth open with the teeth just showing and walked out into the wind without her ladder.
Her father would have grumbled about the unfinished edges, but the paint had stopped asking his permission years ago.
