Realistic eye with tear tattoo

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a detailed blue-green iris with a dark pupil, long black lashes and a shaded eyebrow above. A skin-toned tear with a glossy highlight runs down from the lower lid, and the surrounding skin has soft orange and purple shading. The eye fills the centre of the frame, with the edges of the design cropped at the top and right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are seventeen and the abbot has given you the eyes because your hand is steady and your brushes are the fine ones made from squirrel hair. The panel is a Madonna for the new pilgrim chapel, and Brother Giles has already laid the gold and the blue. Your job is the small things: the lashes, one by one, each dark stroke trailing the lid like a fringe of rain. You mix the iris from malachite and a little yellow ochre, then touch the pupil in with soot ground in linseed, so the whole face seems to look back at whoever kneels below.

On the last evening Brother Giles stands behind you and says the eye is too wet. The abbot has seen it from the nave and says a holy watcher should not weep for the people who come to be seen. He tells you to take the tear off. You nod, and when he has gone you wait for the bell for compline, then you paint the tear on again, a pale bead running from the lower lid, and you add a fleck of white so it catches the candle the way a real drop does.

In the morning the panel is carried into the chapel and set on its trestle. Pilgrims shuffle in from the wet road, stamping their boots, and one by one they stop beneath the painted face. The abbot walks the length of the nave with his hands folded in his sleeves. He pauses at the Madonna for a long time, then looks at you across the candles, and says nothing at all. The tear stays.
