The fiddler had been sawing the same reel since nine, and the dancers at the Hollin Green hall had stopped counting the turns. Only the poppy above the stage door kept watching. A painter who died before the roof was mended had put it there, one eye, green as pond weed, set in a bed of red petals that curled at the edges as if they were too hot to lie still.

Mary Ann Cole came in at midnight wearing her mother's shawl, and nobody asked her to dance. She stood by the cloakroom with her hands knotted together, and the poppy's eye followed her across the boards. When the fiddler paused to wet his lips, the eye let fall a single bead, bright as glass. It ran down the painted petal and pooled on the floor by her boot.

Walter Dunne saw it land and laughed, then saw Mary Ann's face and stopped. He crossed the hall and held out his hand the way a man offers something he is not sure he should be holding. They danced the reel badly, feet tangling, and the poppy watched them all the way round while its tear dried gold in the lamplight.

The hall came down for flats years later, but the old boards went to a barn out past Fennick, and a red stain still shows in the grain where the tear fell. The farmers' wives sweep that corner twice a week and never quite get it clean.
