Watercolour house and swirl tattoo
Other · Colour · Photo
A line drawn house with window panes sits on the left, beside a circular swirl with bold black outlines and curling bands. Blue, purple and pink watercolour-style washes spread across the design and the surrounding skin, with the fill blending softly into the black linework. The composition is tightly cropped on a curved limb, with the design filling most of the frame.

Nobody in Harrow Cove painted their doors blue anymore, not since the tide took the Pellow house in the winter of the great swell. But my grandmother did, every spring, with a brush she kept wrapped in oilcloth in the drawer under the bread knife. She said a house wants a window that looks out, and a window that is shut tight is only a wall with ambitions.

The spiral lived out past the breakwater. Fishermen called it the Turning, a patch of sea where the water went round on itself like a dog settling into a basket. Boats that drifted into it came back out facing the wrong way, or didn't come back at all. My grandmother would sit on the step with her paints and stare at it for an hour before she'd touch the brush.
The summer I was nine, my brother Tam rowed out to prove the old stories wrong and got caught in the bands of blue water. I watched from the upstairs window. Gran carried her palette down to the quay, dipped the brush in the sea, and painted a window onto the air above the Turning, four panes with the glass left bare. The water slowed. Tam rowed out of it with the oars still in his hands. Next morning there was a window of salt-stiff paint on the harbour wall that nobody could scrub away.
That is why, the fishermen say, the Turning has a door of sorts now, and why Gran's last words to me were to keep the window clean. I do. Some evenings I see a light moving behind the glass, and I wave, and it waves back.
