Dear Marian, you will not believe what turned up on the pitch beside my fish stall this morning, and I have told everyone, so you may as well hear it from me. The rain had been coming sideways since six, bouncing off the awnings of the Saturday market, and the lads from the council were shouting about the drains. Then a blue box sat down on the corner by the bric-a-brac, dark and square, with a little lamp on its roof that was switched off, and nobody saw it arrive.

Let me describe it properly, because Mr Okafor from the veg stall swears it was taller on the inside. Its paint was black where the rain had sluiced the grey away, and someone had flung ink across it like a boy with a paintbrush, great blue splashes running down the panels and pooling at the base. A dark burst sat on the roof corner like a firework gone wrong. The doors had six little windows each, fogged on the inside. A man in a long coat stepped out, looked at the puddles as though they had personally offended him, and asked me the time. I told him half past eleven. He said, "Close enough," and went back in, and the box made a noise like a ship's horn and was gone.

Left in the puddle was a single brass key, still warm when I picked it up. I have it in my apron pocket now. I keep thinking the box will come back for it, and I have decided I will hand it over if it does, provided the man apologises for the fish.
