Colour tattoo of a blue TARDIS with a sunburst, roses, scrollwork and a banner on the side of the ribs, in a Neo-trad style.

TARDIS and roses on the ribs

Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A blue TARDIS sits at the centre of the design, with a yellow sunburst behind it and dark scrollwork curling up either side. Red roses and green leaves fill the lower part, and a banner beneath reads Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey. The bold outlines and saturated colours are set against a softly lit kitchen background.

Nobody on the night ferry from Harwich believed me about the cupboard, least of all Bev, who has run the galley for nineteen years and treats the dry stores as her personal kingdom. It was a tall blue cabinet wedged between the tinned peaches and the custard powder, its little windows lit a soft yellow as if someone inside had left the lamp on.

I should have fetched the bosun. Instead I opened the door, which was a mistake, because the inside was far bigger than the outside and smelled of roses and hot metal. A small woman in a marmalade-coloured cardigan looked up from a panel of levers and said, "Oh good, you're the one with the rose tea. Hold this." I held it. The tea was cold, and the panel was humming a tune that wasn't quite a tune.

She explained, between flicks of a brass switch, that the ferry was meant to dock in Hook of Holland at six but had been at it since Tuesday, and that somebody had to take the bread out before it rose the wrong way. I asked why it had to be me. She pointed at the flour on my sleeve and said that was the only qualification anyone had ever needed.

When the door opened again we were tied up at Harwich, the galley clock said four minutes past midnight, and the cupboard was just a cupboard. Bev was counting peaches. On the chopping board sat a single damp rose, and beside it a bread roll with a faintly blue crust that tasted of the sea. I've kept the rose in a jar on the windowsill. Bev says that's a very wibbly thing to do. I say it's a very timey thing, and she throws a tin of peaches at me.
