Lotus outline on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A simple black outline of a lotus flower with a rounded central bud and layered petals on either side. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or colour inside the petals. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against warm, dim indoor lighting, with a grey sleeve visible above it.

The lake at Morrow Fen froze so hard that year the dance hall at Haddon Cross had to be swept with ash rather than broom, and still the fiddler Tomas Brill would not play a note until the ice was gone. The villagers said it was pride. His mother said it was a promise made to a girl who drowned under that ice when they were both nine, and that he had never once in twenty years set foot on the water.

On the first night of thaw, a stranger came up the lane carrying a shallow tin pan with a single lotus floating in it, the petals still open though no lotus grows within three hundred miles of Morrow Fen. She asked for the fiddler by name and he came out to the porch with his bow still in his fist. She set the pan on the rail between them. The flower was drawn in the water, she said, not grown: a bud at the centre, petals folding out on either side like hands held open for something to be placed in them.
He asked what she wanted. She said the girl had asked her to fetch the tune back, and that a tune held too long in one place goes sour, like milk. Tomas laughed, then did not. He lifted the fiddle and played the thing he had never finished, and the petals in the pan stood up one by one, each one a little higher than the last, until the bud at the centre split and went quiet.
In the morning the pan was empty and the lake was black water to the reeds. Tomas walked down to the shore with his coat open and went in up to his knees, then stopped, because the surface was so still he could see the lotus drawn on it, pale and perfect, opening for him and staying open.
