Fox and flowers on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A fox sits in profile with its bushy tail curling around the lower arm, rendered with orange and purple shading and fine black outlines. Dotwork arcs and small stars form a circle behind the fox, with outlined flowers and stems on either side. The colour is soft and blended, with pale highlights on the chest, and the composition is set vertically along the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down from the hill the winter the orchard wall fell, and the old gardener's widow swore she saw it sit on the mossy stone with its tail wrapped round its feet like a woman keeping warm. Come closer, you lot, and mind the lantern. That was the year the bees went quiet and the frost got into the leeks, and nobody in Pennick Lane had a kind word for anything with teeth.

But the fox did not steal hens. It sat in the frozen beds with its face turned from the village, watching the little dotted stars that Harriet Coombe had painted on her gate to keep the sprites away. Harriet was ninety and stubborn, and she did not believe in sprites, only in the rent and the weather. Still, she went out each dusk with a bowl of warm milk and set it beside the fox, and the fox let her.

On the last night of the frost the milk was empty and the fox was gone, and in its place stood a ring of tall purple flowers where nothing had grown all year. Harriet walked the length of the garden, touching each bloom, and found that the ground under them had gone soft as bread. She never told anyone what she planted there. The bees came back in April, and that, my dears, is all the proof a sensible person needs.
