Watercolour poppies on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cluster of poppies in pink and red sits on the upper leg, with thin stems, unopened buds and a few leaves rising from the base. The petals are softly shaded with wash-like blends, and loose splatters of pink and grey-green run across the design. Colour dominates the composition, which is centred on the leg with the flowers fanning out towards the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the first tray of poppy seed bloomers out before the bells at St Anne's struck five, and the back room smelled of scalded milk and yeast. Her father had always said you could tell a good baker by the crust before you tasted it. She had never managed to tell him she thought the seeds made the difference, the way they went grey-blue in the heat and then gave off a faint nutty sweetness that made customers stop at the door.

The seed sacks came on Tuesdays from a merchant in Spalding who wrote his invoices in green ink and never once spelled her name right. This week a sack split on the step. Black seeds ran across the flagstones like spilt ink, and she knelt with a dustpan and a jam jar, scooping them back while the sky over the rooftops went from iron to the colour of weak tea. A van pulled up outside. The driver wanted a loaf and a word about the weather, and she gave him both, feeling the seeds grind under her knees.

By the time the shutters went up, the jar was half full and the first orders were boxed. She pressed the last of the seeds into a round loaf for herself, a rough thing with a split top, and carried it out to the step to watch the street wake. Pink light caught the wet cobbles where a few seeds had been swept into the gutter and lay there swollen with water, and she thought of the red field behind the mill where she had lain as a girl, the petals as thin as paper, the seed heads rattling like dice.

She tore the loaf open. The crumb was pale and steamed in the cold air. Somewhere a shop bell rang, and Nell sat with her knees still stung and ate it slowly, one seed at a time, until the street was full of people and the jar was empty.
