Realistic orange poppy with stem

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single poppy bloom with orange, layered petals and a dark, textured centre sits at the top of a thin black stem that runs downward. The petals use soft gradients and fine shading to suggest volume and a slightly curled edge. The orange ink is set against pale skin on a plain black background, with the flower placed above the stem.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Penhale had been told the poppies would never come up on the embankment. Mr Shaw at the depot said the clay was too wet, the trains threw ballast everywhere, and anything orange would be cut back by the council before August. She ignored him, pressing the seeds into the bank with her thumb the way her mother had done along the garden wall in Hythe, and she kept the empty packet in her coat pocket as proof of her optimism.

The first bloom came in June, a single red-orange cup opening on a stalk no thicker than a bootlace. Its petals were crumpled like tissue paper that had been folded and forgotten in a pocket, and its dark centre looked wet even in the dry afternoon. Marjorie sat on an upturned crate and watched it for an hour while the signal changed from green to red and back again.

The council man came in July with his strimmer. He stopped when he saw her kneeling there, lifted his cap, and walked around the flower instead. He did it the next week, and the week after, until a narrow path had worn into the grass that bent around one stem and nothing else.

By September the seed heads had dried into grey pepper pots. Marjorie cracked one open, shook the tiny seeds into an envelope, and wrote on the front the name of the man with the strimmer. She left it under a stone at the foot of the track, and in the morning it was gone.
