Watercolour world map on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A world map showing the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia is tattooed across the inner forearm. The continents are filled with soft, blended washes of pink, purple, teal and blue, with slightly feathered edges that suggest watercolour. The map is shown against a plain skin background with a dark blue fabric edge and a black and white checked wall behind.

You are painting the world onto the back wall of the Wanderer's Tent because the old canvas split along the Atlantic during the Skegness fair and Mrs Orme says a split world is bad for trade. You thin the ultramarine with rainwater from the butt behind the dodgems and let it run where it wants. Pink goes on for the Americas because Dorothy Pask told you pink meant patience. The teal you leave wet so the seas bleed into the land, which is how the sea always gets into everything at a fair.

The fair moves every week, so the map is never finished. Each town the lorries carry you through takes a corner of Asia off in the rain, and you repaint it in the next field with a brush that smells of diesel and liquorice. Tomas, who runs the coconut shy and has never seen the sea, watches you from the steps with a bag of chips going cold in his lap. He asks where Australia is. You dip the smallest brush, find it low on the right, and dab it blue. It drips over the edge onto the canvas frame.
He wants to know if you can walk there from the blue bit. You tell him no, only paint can get there, and that the map is a promise the paint makes and the paint is not always reliable. He nods as if you have confirmed something. At dusk you pack up, and the wall has dried in soft rings, so Africa has slipped a little into the Med and the Americas lean toward Ireland. In the lamplight the continents look like they are still settling, the way the whole fair does each night before it rolls away.
