Outline world map on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black line tattoo of the world map covers the forearm, showing the outlines of the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. The linework is a single even outline with no shading, and the lines are clean and consistent. The forearm is photographed outdoors against a gravel background, with a denim sleeve at the top and a relaxed hand at the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at Carrow Junction could say who first drew the map on the waiting room wall, only that it had to be gone over every spring with a single pen, and the pen must never leave the paper. Ivy Pell, who swept the platforms for forty years, said the lands would slide off the edge of the world if the line ever broke. People believed her, mostly because the trains ran on time only when the map was fresh.

One March her grandson Dan, impatient and sixteen, took the pen while the stationmaster was at his dinner. He meant to finish before the 4.10 came in. He went round the Americas in a rush, down the long spine of South America, then across to Africa. At the Horn his hand jerked, the nib lifted, and a thin gap opened between the coast and the rest of the world. By the time the stationmaster came back, a bead of ink had run down the glass and the green signal lamp over the tracks had gone out.

That night the 4.10 did not come. Ivy went out with a lamp and found the platform empty, the rails running off into a grey sea with nothing on the far side. She sat on the bench under the map and traced the broken line with her finger until morning. Then she took the pen and began again from the Americas, not lifting once, and the line closed at the Cape as the sun came up.

The train came in at seven with mud on its wheels. Dan, who had never been further than the next town, bought a ticket to nowhere in particular and never once looked back at the wall. Ivy kept the map. Every spring after, she went over the lines without stopping, and nobody in Carrow Junction asked where the trains went.
