Marguerite, the tide has finally gone out over the old harbour at Bristol, and I walked the mudflats until my boots filled with silt, looking for anything the sea had kept. I found a rusted fitting that might have belonged to a ferry, and I found the ribs of a wooden boat, and I thought of you pacing the deck with that map you drew on the back of the ration ledger.

You said the continents were only lines because lines were what we had left. Ink, you said, was cheaper than memory, and the sea had taken most of the land anyway. I told you that was morbid. You laughed and said the outline was the only honest thing on the page, because it showed where the edges were and left the rest to whoever came next.

Today the wind shifted to the south-west and I could smell Africa on it, or what the relay station says is Africa, a long dry ache over the water. I have decided to row out to the buoy at dawn, the one the cartographers' guild anchored off the coast of what used to be Wales. If the tide is kind I will be standing on the shore of the Iberian ruin by the end of the week. I will send word the moment I can find a dry hand to write it.
