Feather tattoo on a shoulder in black and grey

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a bare shoulder and upper chest, cropped so that no face is visible, with a dark feather tattoo across the collarbone area. The feather has fine, tapering strands and soft shading that gives it a naturally dimensional look. The image is in black and white, with a shallow focus that softens the background and draws attention to the tattoo.

The castle at Corrow Fell had been shut up since the flood took the lower bailey, and Maud Ashby went up the hill each morning with a basket and a pair of shears because the Trust paid her a shilling a day to cut back the brambles from the chapel steps. Nobody had told her about the crows. They came down off the broken battlements in a black tide whenever she knelt, and they left feathers on the stones as if they were paying a debt.

On the ninth day she found a single feather lodged in the chapel's piscina, long and grey-black, its strands fine as hair and tapering to nothing. She turned it over in the cold light. The vane had been split down the middle, neatly, the way a clerk slits a letter. She put it in her coat pocket meaning to show Mr Dunning at the Trust, and forgot it until supper, when she found it still there, warm from her hip and curled at the tip as though it had been listening.

That night the wind came up the valley and went through the ruined hall with a sound like someone reading aloud from a ledger they did not believe. Maud sat by the grate with the feather laid across her collarbone, just to see, and felt it settle as if it had always belonged to that place. In the morning there were no crows on the chapel steps. The brambles had been cut back by someone else, cleanly, all the way to the wall, and the only thing left on the stone was a second feather, pointing towards the sea.
